Fifa’s youth transfers investigation: six key questions | Paul Wilson

16-11-2018 What are Fifa’s rules on signing minors? Which clubs have fallen foul of them? And what are the consequences? No, Barcelona were handed a two window ban in 2014 for irregularities over the signing of players under the age of 18, when they had a number of prospects from Korea and Africa on their books. The club appealed and succeeded in getting the ban pushed back to 2015, shrewdly using the time thus bought to bring in a clutch of new signings including Luis Suáraz, Ivan Rakitic, Marc-André ter Stegen and Thomas Vermaelen. A year later both Madrid clubs were found guilty of the same offence and forbidden to make any new signings for two windows. Both appealed to the court of arbitration for sport. Atlético had their ban upheld while Real Madrid, who had signed minors including the sons of the then coach Zinedine Zidane, had their punishment reduced to a single window. Continue reading...

England v All Blacks, delicious drop shots and teen strikers | Classic YouTube

16-11-2018 This week’s roundup also features a monumental high school football comeback and vintage Australian motorsport mayhem1) It’s England against the All Blacks at Twickenham this weekend, which is a rivalry of sorts … albeit deeply one-sided as New Zealand have won 16 of the 23 contests there since 1925. The Red Rose’s last victory was in 2012, featuring three tries in eight minutes and a show-stopping performance from Manu Tuilagi; for balance, witness Joe Rokocoko in his pomp in 2006 as the hosts were thrashed 41-20, the highlight being Carl Hayman scoring one of his two international tries, and what a try it was. Perhaps the greatest ever contest between the two teams, at least on English shores, was this try-fest from 2002; or maybe it’s this 26-26 humdinger from 1997. The opening match of the 1991 World Cup included a big hit by Peter Winterbottom on Graeme Bachop; the great No 7 had also been in action eight years earlier as England claimed their first win over New Zealand at Twickenham for 47 years.2) No matter what transpires on Saturday afternoon, though, it’s unlikely to top Auguy Slowik’s 80m try for Jersey against London Irish in the Championship last weekend. Back in the Midlands, a couple of dozen of their county colleagues were in the Hilton’s Howard Wilkinson suite, listening to a presentation about how to get ahead in sustainable investment. Earlier that morning, they had sat through a talk on how improve their networking and presentation techniques, and later that day they had another scheduled how to build a LinkedIn profile. Outside, the rain beat against the windows. Related: Ben Stokes to bat at three as England look to win series in Kandy Continue reading...

16-11-2018 Manchester United manager José Mourinho has blamed exertions for his side's 3-1 derby defeat to Premier League leaders Manchester City.United fought back for a 2-1 victory against the Italian champions Juventus in Turin on Wednesday while City cruised through a home game against Ukrainians Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0.'Everybody has to agree - it is one thing to go to Juventus and play against one of the best teams in the world for 90 minutes and another thing to beat Shakhtar Donetsk at home 6-0 and be very relaxed. We arrived in different circumstances,' said the Portuguese coach. But in contrast with some defeats this season, Mourinho was unwilling to criticise his team's attitude and effort, saying 'for me zero words against my players, everything is positive. I am with them and they are with me.'Sportblog: Would Pep Guardiola win the title with this Manchester United squad? Continue reading...

16-11-2018 Eddie Jones gives Bath wing his debut against Japan, having been impressed with how his fitness has improvedWhen Joe Cokanasiga was plucked from obscurity to tour Argentina last year, Eddie Jones was typically blunt as to why: “He’s big and he’s fast.” On Thursday – Cokanasiga’s 21st birthday – Jones handed the Fiji-born wing a Test debut and cited his immeasurable progress over the past 18 months.
